Research - Genre

The genre I would like to research for my final piece is, on the wider scale of things, crime. But more specifically, crime in the early 90s. My inspiration for this time period is predominantly the style of clothing and the influence of music, such as The Stone Roses, The Charlatans and many other bands. I feel like the genre of crime suits this time period appropriately.
Another one of my inspirations for this particular genre would be the recent TV show, 'This is England 90'. I feel like this show captures the essence of the time period, with the aforementioned music and style of dress, and it blends well into the aspect of youths being roped into crime and the dodgy drug scene.

The Genre

Crime films generally follow the lives of criminals, as you would imagine, but can vary in appraoches. It may be the realistic, gritty representation of cime; or perhaps the far-fetched, slick representation. However, crime is often 'glamorized' in these films to allow the audience to root for the criminals and have them believe they are the good guys.
Through secondary research I have found that the following are the typical conventions of the crime drama:
  • Consumption of alcohol and other illegal substances
  • Law enforcement being a 'pest' to the protagonist
  • The main protagonist having a tough upbringing, then taking a path into crime
  • Usage of weapons
